It’s March, and a few of my 2017 goals have already gone to the wayside. One really important one was to be better about my cleaning routine. In a dream world, I would hire a cleaning person to keep our home clean. It’s just not in the budget right now. I absolutely HATE cleaning, but I love a clean house, so something’s gotta give. Over the years, I have tried a few different cleaning printables and systems. The one tool I’ve used most consistently has been an app called Home Routines.
Home Routines is one of first apps I downloaded when I started using an iPhone. It’s been one of the most useful I’ve found. Yes, it costs money ($4.99) but SO WORTH IT. Trust me.
Home Routines works with the concept of Zone Cleaning, which means you break your house up into zones and each week, you are focusing on certain zones so that no part of your house gets forgotten. Also, breaking it into zones really does make the process seem less overwhelming.
When you open up the app, it tells you the day’s routines. I’ve set up routines for each day (for example, my kids both have library on Tuesdays, so on Mondays, it reminds me to pack their library books.) When I have tasks to complete on certain days, I often forget, so this really helps me stay on track.
My daily tasks are tasks I do each day– yes, I need a reminder to check the mailbox daily! Some of this is really basic, but there are days when I get home from work and I am absolutely spent– and I need someone to tell me what I need to get accomplished. Sad but true!
Weekly tasks are even more important to remember since I do them less often! Some are obvious– bills, for example– but others are things I would easily forget about. We vacuum more often than once a week, because we have a dog!
The most helpful piece of all, cleaning-wise, is the weekly zone schedule.
Every week you are assigned a zone, and they’re completely customizable. You can add items and change rooms if you need to– whatever fits your home works.
Obviously, you still have to do the cleaning (ugh!) but if you have to do it, this is the way to go. I love that I can break this up over the week, knowing what I have to do, and if I only have five extra minutes a day, I can sometimes tackle one thing on the list. Sometimes, that’s the only way to get things done! If you don’t have money in the budget to hire a cleaning person, I highly recommend the Home Routines app.
