Confession: I am not always the best eater. I use that term lightly because I hate saying food is “bad,” or “good,” but often have to force myself to eat healthy. I’m not a big “veggies at lunch” person, and I get sick of salads, so smoothies are something I use to make sure that I get what I need every day. I wanted to share my smoothie recipe, which changes sometimes depending on my mood but for the most part, is the same all the time. I call it my “million dollar smoothie” because I feel so much better when I drink it regularly, that I always say I feel like a million bucks. Cheesy but true!
This green smoothie gives me energy, helps keep my sinuses clear (a big problem for me) and lessens my migraines. It’s a total win.
I have tried various liquids to mix in with my smoothies over the years, but Kefir is the star for me. Kefir is a yogurt-style drink and it’s loaded with probiotics, which helps fight off illnesses. As a mom of two, it’s a necessity. My kids like it straight, but it’s a little tart for me, so I have to add it into my smoothie. I start off with a cup of plain Kefir.
Next I add two scoops of protein powder. This is what I’m using these days, which is a protein/vitamin shake mix. I switch between vanilla and chocolate, and I like it because it tastes better than regular protein powder and doesn’t have that weird protein powder smell. Also, Amazon has it on Subscribe & Save, so it’s a great deal.
Next, I throw in a cup of frozen fruit. Again, I switch around, but my favorite is a frozen berry mix. I throw them right in frozen.
This is when most people would think it gets weird– I throw in a hefty handful of baby spinach. This is what makes it a “green smoothie,” which I know sounds gross. Trust me, YOU WON’T TASTE THE SPINACH. The spinach is so mild tasting, that everything else masks the flavor. Some people put kale in their green smoothies, and that I can taste. I can’t taste the spinach.
Next is a ripe banana to add a little more sweetness.
A tablespoon of chia seeds, which are supposed to be some crazy super health food. They also contain protein and are supposedly very filling.
I mix mine in my Nutribullet. I have had it for three years now and love it. Clean up is super easy and it does an amazing job with the frozen fruit.
